House Rules

Time

Session: For our purposes, a session is equal to one week in real time. Any mention of “session” in a rule should be understood to be once per week.

Season: FRO8 is divided into seasons, which are periods of several in-character weeks (presently planned to be 6 weeks each) in which the game is considered to be active and GMs will be running scenes. They are followed by a few weeks of “break” in which casual RP may take place but no major story content will go on. A new season may begin several months to years after the conclusion of a previous season. Rules that reference “season” (such as Great Destiny) refer to this definition.

Glory and Infamy

The rules for Glory and Infamy have been revised in order to grant them a degree of mechanical impact, and add diminishing returns on gains such that reaching the highest ranks of Glory and Infamy is less commonplace and more of an achievement.

PCs will continue to start with Glory ranks equal to their Insight Rank, as normal (modified by advantages and disadvantages such as Famous or Infamous).

Crafting

Changes to the crafting rules can be found Here.

Duelling

Changes to the duelling rules can be found Here.

Skills

  • The Farming, Fishing and Mining skills are no longer Craft Skills. They are now separate Merchant skills in their own right and follow the rules of ordinary skill rolls. Farming uses Stamina as it’s trait, Fishing uses Reflexes for river pole fishing, Agility for spearfishing and Stamina for deep sea pole fishing or net fishing. Mining uses Water as its attribute for prospecting and Stamina for mining.
  • Your Iaijutsu Skill Rank cannot be raised beyond your Kenjutsu Skill Rank + 2.
  • Spellcraft: Shugenja may purchase spellcraft emphases in Spell keywords (Battle, Craft, Defense, Divination, Illusion, Imperial, Jade, Thunder, Travel, Ward). These apply when casting a spell with that keyword. Having multiple emphases for a spell with multiple keywords does not allow multiple rerolls.

New Skills

Linguistics (Intelligence) this is considered a Merchant Skill. This is part of the Revised Language Rules

  • Mastery 3: Reduce time to learn this language by 1/3
  • Mastery 5: Subtract 5 from the TN to learn this language
  • Mastery 7: Reduce time to learn this language by another 1/3 (Cumulative so 2/3's total)

Mastery Abilities

Five Chosen Artisan, Games, Lore, Perform and Craft skills:

  • Rank 3: The character gains an additional +3 Insight above the total normally indicated by his Rings and Skill Ranks.
  • Rank 5: The character gains a Free Raise on all uses of this skill.
  • Rank 7: The character gains an additional Free Raise on all uses of this skill (for a total of 2 Free Raises). The character also gains an additional +2 Insight above the total normally indicated by his Rings and Skill Ranks (in addition to the bonus from rank 3).

All Other Artisan, Games, Lore, Perform and Craft skills:

  • Rank 3: The character gains an additional 1k0 on all uses of this skill.
  • Rank 5: The character gains a Free Raise on all uses of this skill.
  • Rank 7: The character gains an additional 0k1 on all uses of this skill.

Calligraphy and Engineering retain their existing mastery abilities for rank 5 rather than using the rank 5 mastery ability here, but receive the rank 3 and rank 7 abilities.

The Free Raises from these mastery abilities stack with the Free Raise that all skills receive at rank 10 - if you manage to reach rank 10 in one of these skills, enjoy those three Free Raises. You deserve them.

Iaijutsu

  • Rank 5: The character gains a +1k0 bonus to all Contested Rolls using Iaijutsu.
  • Rank 7: Automatically learn your Awareness ranks in bonus facts about your opponent after your Assessment roll in a duel.

Kenjutsu

  • Rank 5: When rolling damage dice with a sword, the first 1 per die may be rerolled, as with an Emphasis.

Knives

  • Rank 3: Off-hand penalties do not apply when using a knife (This, of course, means only for the knife itself.)
  • Rank 5: Use of any knife confers a Free Raise towards use of the Extra Attack Maneuver.
  • Rank 7: The total of all damage rolls made with a knife is increased by 0k1.

Spears

  • Rank 3: Opponents with a Reduction Rating have their rating reduced by 2 when attacked with a spear.
  • Rank 5: A character wielding a spear adds +5 to his Initiative Score during Skirmishes. Additionally, a spear may be readied as a Free Action rather than a Simple Action.
  • Rank 7: Damage rolls made with spears against mounted opponents or opponents of Large size or greater, or while within 5 ft. of an ally wielding a spear, are increased by +1k1.

Staves

  • Rank 3: Opponents’ armor bonuses are no longer doubled against staff attacks. All staves may be readied as a Free Action instead of a Simple Action.
  • Rank 5: Use of a staff confers one Free Raise toward use of the Knockdown Maneuver.
  • Rank 7: Staves gain a bonus to damage rolls equal to your Staves Skill Rank.

Polearms

  • Rank 3: The total of all damage rolls made with a polearm is increased by +1k0.
  • Rank 5: A character wielding a polearm adds his Polearms Skill Rank to his Armor TN during Skirmishes.
  • Rank 7: All polearms may be readied as a Free Action instead of a Simple Action.

Weapon Rules

  • No-dachi: Are now Heavy Weapons
  • Bisento: This weapon is restricted to militant members of the Brotherhood of Shinsei.
  • Rope Dart, Ninja-to, Blowgun, Tsubute, Shuriken, and the Three-section Staff all have the ninja keyword.
  • Katana are wielded with two hands, unless you are trained in the Mirumoto Bushi school or the Moto Bushi school. You may choose to wield a Katana one-handed, but, even if you have the Mastery Level 3 ability for Knives or War Fans, you still suffer the -5 penalty to your main-hand attacks for duel wielding. Techniques that remove only off-hand penalties do not remove the -5 penalty to the main-hand attacks. Techniques that do not specify off-hand penalties (such as Yoritomo Bushi Rank 1) remove the main hand penalty as well.
  • Oyumi (Crossbow): This weapon (Imperial Archives, pg. 98-99) and the related skill are NOT permitted for use.

Rolls

Honor Rolls
Five Rings Online 8 will not be using the optional Honor Roll rule on Core, pg. 92.

Character Creation Rules

These can also be found on the pages relevant to their changes for ease of reference.

Families

  • As the Hitomi family was absorbed into the Togashi in 1168-69, all former Hitomi monks will have the Togashi name, but start with the Hitomi family trait bonus.
  • As the Hoshi family was absorbed into the Togashi in 1168-69, all former Hoshi monks will have the Togashi name, but start with the Hoshi family trait bonus.
  • Imperial Families are not permitted for play.
  • The Bat, Dragonfly, and Oriole Minor Clans may take the Generic Ronin School as their clans do not have bushi schools. This does not require purchasing the Different School Advantage.

Schools

See Here for a list of Schools and their availability.

  • The techniques of the Ancestral Hiruma Bushi school were rediscovered in 1169. PCs may begin play as a Hiruma Bushi.
  • Daidoji Iron Warriors receive any one Heavy Weapon or Spear in their Outfit, instead of any one Heavy Weapon or Polearm, as they are frequent spear wielders.
  • Characters will only be able to learn rank 1 in the Hitomi Kikage Zumi school, as the dojo was disbanded when the family was absorbed into the Togashi. Further advancement will continue with Togashi Tattooed Order Rank 2.
  • Hoshi Tsurui Zumi monks are treated as Brotherhood Monks for the purposes of purchasing kiho.
  • Tamori Shugenja are only permitted to make potions (per their school technique) using Rank 1, 2, and 3 spells.
  • Ikoma Lion's Shadow have the [Ninja] tag instead of the [Bushi] tag. They are required to take the disadvantage “Dark Secret: Ninja” for no points.
  • Mantis Brawlers receive a katana and wakizashi in their Outfit, instead of “any two weapons,” as they are samurai
  • Shiba Bushi receive the Polearms Skill rather than the Spears Skill at Character Creation, as they are one of the iconic users of the Naginata.
  • Shosuro Infiltrators must take the “Dark Secret: Ninja” Disadvantage for no points.
  • Horuichi Shugenja and Ide Emissary outfits both include a Unicorn riding horse.
  • The Fuzake Shugenja School's trait bonus is Willpower.
  • A Clan Ronin's outfit consists of only their daisho, ashigaru or light armor, sturdy clothing, a traveling pack, and 1 koku.

School Techniques

  • Bayushi Courtier
    • Rank 5: May inflict Infamy, Sworn Enemy, or Obligation. It may not inflict either Social Disadvantage or (the non-existent) Bad Reputation. In order to inflict a Major Obligation, the Bayushi Courtier must call 2 Raises. In order to raise the Insight Rank of the Sworn Enemy, the Bayushi Courtier must call 2 Raises per Insight Rank. This Technique may not create a Kharmic Sworn Enemy.
  • Ikoma Bard
    • Rank 1: Now works as follows: “You may use the Perform: Storytelling skill to engage in public bragging on behalf of another person. If you can cite heroic or noble actions by that person and successfully roll Perform: Storytelling / Awareness at a base TN 15, calling Raises if you wish. That person will gain 1 point of Glory, +1 for each Raise you called. In addition, for the next week, that person is considered to have an additional number of Glory ranks equal to your School Rank for the purpose of social rolls and recognition. These temporary Glory ranks do not affect the number of Glory points they gain. You may do this a number of times per week equal to your school rank, but a single person may only benefit from this once per week (from you or from other Ikoma Bards).”
  • Kaiu Engineer
    • Rank 3: Replace with: When crafting any set of armor, you may increase the project’s Complexity Rating by 2 in order to add your School Rank to the armor’s Reduction value and add half your School Rank (rounding up) to the armor’s Armor TN bonus.
  • Kakita Artisan
    • rank 1: Kakita Artisans may now call only one additional Raise per School Rank on their chosen art(s), rather than unlimited Raises.
  • Kakita Bushi
    • Rank 1: The bonus of +1k1 + School Rank applies to the Assessment, Focus, and Draw rolls in a iaijutsu duel.
    • Rank 3: In a iaijutsu duel, when gaining Raises towards your Strike roll from your Assessment, Focus or Strike roll, or bonuses to your ATN from your Composure or Defence roll, you gain a bonus for every full seven points by which you win the roll, rather than every ten points.
  • Kasuga Smuggler
    • Rank 1: Replace: “At character creation, you may learn an additional gaijin language for free with every purchase of the Languages Advantage.” with “Whenever you purchase the first rank of written or spoken fluency in a language, you may learn the first rank of fluency in whichever form you did not purchase at no cost. This applies both before and after character creation, though it does not remove the requirement of having an opportunity to learn the language in the first place.”
  • Mirumoto Bushi
    • Rank 2: Add “When you take an action to draw your katana, you may draw your wakizashi in the same action.” Existing text unchanged. (Clarification: this will apply to all Iaijutsu rolls made during a duel.)
  • Tsi Smith
    • Rank 1: Replace with: All Craft Skills are considered School Skills for you for the purposes of effects that target School Skills. When making a Craft skill roll, you may call Raises to add Features after seeing the results of the roll, rather than before.
    • Rank 3: Replace with: When using a Craft skill to create any item, the time required is reduced by half.
  • Shiba Bushi
    • Rank 5: should read: “Additionally, you may now spend Void Points on enhancements (as listed in the Book of Earth) twice in one Round.”

Path Techniques

  • College of Clarity
    • The bonus for expending your focus on a iaijutsu roll is now +1k0 + your Fire Ring.
  • Disciples of Sun Tao
    • The bonus continues to apply to all iaijutsu rolls, but is now equal to half the user’s Honour rank (rounded down).
  • Hojatsu’s Legacy
    • At the beginning of the Assessment round of a iaijutsu duel, before the duelists have made their Assessment rolls, you may spend a Void Point as a Free Action to force a Contested Kenjutsu/Fire roll with your opponent. If you win the roll, your opponent may not spend Void Points on contested Iaijutsu rolls in this duel.
  • Kenburo’s Way
    • Applies to all Iaijutsu rolls during the Assessment and Focus rounds.
  • Kitsuki Justicar
    • You may now add twice your Investigation skill rank to your Assessment roll during a iaijutsu duel, instead of your base Investigation skill rank. You gain a bonus of +1k0 to all Focus, Draw and Defence rolls against an opponent who has been decreed guilty of a crime by a Dragon Clan or Imperial authority higher than yourself, and you gain +1k0 to all Investigation or Hunting rolls made to hunt such guilty targets.
  • Saigo’s Blades
    • At the beginning of the Assessment phase of a iaijutsu duel, you may choose to add your ranks in Intimidation or Sincerity (your choice) to your contested iaijutsu rolls for the round. If you do this, lose Honour as though you had rolled Intimidation or Sincerity (Deceit) respectively.

Advanced School Techniques

  • Kenshinzen
    • Rank 2: Your dice explode on a roll of 9 or 10 when rolling Assessment, Focus and Draw.
  • Mirumoto Swordmaster
    • Rank 2: When spending a Void point to augment a Iaijutsu roll in a duel, you gain an additional +1k1.

Advantages

See Here for permitted and banned Advantages.

  • No Ancestors are permitted for play.
  • Blood of Osano-Wo provides a +10 bonus to Stamina rolls to avoid Heat Exhaustion
  • Different School requires taking a Minor Obligation to the Clan of the School, for no points.
  • Gentries are not permitted during the first season of FRO 8. You can change that IC.
  • Great Destiny only triggers once per season, not once per session.
  • Heart of Vengeance: Now grants +1k1 to attack rolls against the targeted group, and +1k1 to contested rolls against being influenced by members of that group (e.g. Etiquette rolls vs Temptation or Intimidation, Investigation vs Sincerity, etc). It is therefore not applicable in duels.
  • Inheritance: The bonus from Inheritance items is not applicable in iaijutsu duels.
  • The Ishiken-do Advantage is only allowed to Phoenix Void Shugenja.
  • The Language Advantage has been changed. See Here for more details
  • The cost of the Luck advantage has been increased to 5 for each rank (so, 5/10/15).
  • When the Anachronism effect of Reincarnated triggers, it lasts until the end of the scene.
  • Sage only applies to those Lore skills listed in Core, pg. 137.
  • Watanu Trained: Will be changing mechanically but not functionally.
  • *Water Hammer Citizen*: now reads “CC Only, Gain one rank in a Craft Skill of your choice. This rank is applied before XP purchase. The Time Rating of any project you undertake using the Craft macro-skill is reduced by 2.”

Disadvantages

See Here for permitted and banned Disadvantages.

  • If you have the Missing Limb disadvantage, you suffer the -10 penalty to all Katana attacks (regardless of which arm is missing) unless you are a student of the Mirumoto Bushi school or the Moto Bushi school. The distinction here is that with Missing Limb it is still possible to wield a Katana, as it is Medium, whereas it is impossible to wield any weapon with the Large tag with a missing hand or arm (save for Moto Bushi).
  • The penalty on Wanderer also applies to the Trailblazing Emphasis.

Kata

See Here For a list of Kiho.

  • Ninja characters may purchase kata that are listed as available to another school in their clan, but the characters' rings are considered 1 lower for the purposes of meeting Mastery Level requirements.
  • No character may ever learn both kiho and kata.
  • The kata Iron Forest Style (Core, pg. 260) is also available to Lion Elite Spearmen and Toritaka Bushi.
  • Empire Rests On Its Edge: Now applies only to Kenjutsu and iaijutsu attack rolls, thus applying to the Strike roll but not any of the preceding rolls. However, it no longer increases the cost of the associated skill.

Kiho

See Here for a list of Kiho.

  • The optional rules on p. 266 of the Core book are not in use. Accordingly, only members of Brotherhood Monk schools may purchase Kiho, unless specifically noted otherwise (as for the Hoshi Tsurui Zumi).
  • Be aware that atemi require a Free Action to activate, which limits them to your turn, unless otherwise specified by an attack or effect.

Spells

  • The Void spell False Whispers, from Core pg. 195, is not permitted for play.
  • Spells stored in Silent Waters have their duration reduced to 1 Round.
  • Other spells may be restricted on a case-by-case basis.
  • The Spell Research emphasis in the Core Book is not permitted for play. Spells may only be gained through such extremely special circumstances such as gaining an insight rank.
  • Shugenja may not take Multi-Element Spells from the Book of Void pg. 186-189 either at Character Creation or when gaining a new School Rank. The spells may become available through other opportunities, however.

Character Advancement Rules

Paths

See Here for a list of allowed Paths.

  • Characters who take a path that gains them the ninja school-type tag will immediately receive the Disadvantage “Dark Secret: Ninja.”
  • Characters who take a path that gains them a new school-type tag may purchase techniques that the tag has access to (such as kata), meeting any other requirements.
  • Agasha Alchemists are only permitted to make potions (per their path technique) using Rank 1, 2, and 3 spells.
  • Asahina Fire Sculptors do gain the Free Raise on Fire Spells once per day.
  • College of Clarity: The bonus for expending your focus on a iaijutsu roll is now +1k0 + your Fire Ring.
  • Disciples of Sun Tao: The bonus continues to apply to all iaijutsu rolls, but is now equal to half the user’s Honour rank (rounded down).
  • Ronin with the Generic Ronin School are permitted to take other Ronin paths after Rank 1. This is not true for anyone else with the Generic Ronin School.
    • Outside of Ronin only Bat, Dragonfly, and Oriole bushi may take the Generic Ronin School, as their clans do not have bushi schools. This does not require purchasing Different School.
  • Hojatsu’s Legacy: At the beginning of the Assessment round of a iaijutsu duel, before the duelists have made their Assessment rolls, you may spend a Void Point as a Free Action to force a Contested Kenjutsu/Fire roll with your opponent. If you win the roll, your opponent may not spend Void Points on contested Iaijutsu rolls in this duel.
  • The Ikoma Warden path is available to Lion Elite Spearmen at Rank 2.
  • Kenburo’s Way: Applies to all Iaijutsu rolls during the Assessment and Focus rounds.
  • Kitsuki Justicar: You may now add twice your Investigation skill rank to your Assessment roll during a iaijutsu duel, instead of your base Investigation skill rank.
  • Saigo’s Blades: At the beginning of the Assessment phase of a iaijutsu duel, you may choose to add your ranks in Intimidation or Sincerity (your choice) to your contested iaijutsu rolls for the round. If you do this, lose Honour as though you had rolled Intimidation or Sincerity (Deceit) respectively.
  • Toritaka Bushi may take the Hiruma Sniper path at Rank 4.
  • The Tortoise Killer path has the Ninja tag, not the Bushi tag. It requires that the character take Dark Secret: Ninja for no points.
  • Ujina Skirmishers may take the Usagi Bushi Rank 2 path at Rank 4 instead of the Rank 4 path.
  • Water Hammer Smiths may make Water Hammer Armor (as per the Advantage, Strongholds, pg. 107), following all the rules for Crafting. Smiths will be permitted to produce this armor for their own use, but future production will be used by the Smith's Lord for gifts or political objectives.

Advanced Schools

  • Kenshinzen
    • Rank 2: Your dice explode on a roll of 9 or 10 when rolling Assessment, Focus and Draw.
  • Mirumoto Swordmaster
    • Rank 2: When spending a Void point to augment a Iaijutsu roll in a duel, you gain an additional +1k1.

Multiple Schools for Shugenja

  • Affinities and Deficiencies: Affinities and deficiencies both stack.
    • Two Affinities in the same element: Cast as 2 School Ranks higher.
    • Two Deficiencies in the same element: Cast as 2 School Ranks lower.
    • Affinity and Deficiency in the same element: Cast at normal School Rank.
    • Affinity/Deficiency and non-element Affinity (ie, Wards): Stack as above.
  • School Rank: Multiple School is treated as a Path for purposes of determining School Rank for spells. This stacks with any Paths the character may have gained or obtains in the future. Thus, the first Path or Multiple School is counted as a School Rank for the purposes of determining what spells the shugenja may learn. Any subsequent Paths or Multiple Schools do not count as a School Rank. It does not affect School Rank for the purposes of Techniques (such as Tonbo Shugenja).
  • Example: Shiba Kosame begins as a Tonbo Shugenja, and takes the Kawaru Sages Path at IR4. At IR5, she purchases Multiple School and becomes an Isawa Shugenja. She would cast spells as if her School Rank was 4, not 5, and she would have School Rank 4 when using her Tonbo technique.
  • Spells Gained: A Multiple School is treated as a Path for the purposes of learning new spells. The first Multiple School or Path allows the shugenja to select 1 new spell, and any subsequent Paths or Multiple Schools taken do not gain the shugenja more spells.
