Advantages

Here we have a full list of all the Advantages available in the source material for Legend of the Five Rings. Please note that we have banned some advantages and restricted others.

As a reminder, players may take up to 15 exp in Advantages at Character Creation, and gain 10 exp from Disadvantages. Once per season, your character may purchase one additional Advantage with proper justification and approval from the staff. Sphere GMs may also award advantages to characters based on their RP. These do not count against your purchasable advantages each season.

Key

  • If an advantage is marked as 'banned' it is not permitted for play.
  • If an advantage is marked with a blank or a - it is permitted for play as written in the original material.
  • If an advantage is marked with 'CC only' this means it can only be taken at Character Creation. After Creation, it is not possible to gain this advantage.
  • If an advantage is marked with 'PC only' this means it can only be earned after gameplay begins. You must justify their purchase and may require taking actions towards earning them.
  • If an advantage is marked with 'GM only' this means it can only be gained from a GM awarding it for roleplay. These can only be earned through use of actions and GM decision, and will be rare.
  • If an advantage is marked with new rules this means it has different mechanics. Please familiarize yourself with those new mechanics before taking the advantage.

Allies: As suggested in Unexpected Allies 2, the corebook system for determining the cost of an Ally is replaced by the following. Allies are bought in levels, each corresponding to 1 point of Devotion in the L5R 4e corebook. Each level costs points equal to the higher of the NPC's Status or Insight Rank.

For example: an Ally with Status 3, IR2, and Devotion 2 would cost 3 points per level of Devotion (the higher of Status 3 and rank 2 being 3), for a total cost of 6 points. An Ally with Status 1, IR2 and Devotion 4 would cost 2 points per level, for a total of 8.

Note: no PC may start with an NPC of Status 3 or higher as an Ally. Such rarefied connections are possible, but must be established in play. Whether sphere NPCs of lower Status are available for purchase as Allies is at the discretion of that sphere's GMs.

Heart of Vengeance: replace the former effects with “you gain +1k1 to attack rolls against members of the chosen group, and +1k1 to contested social rolls to resist being influenced by members of the chosen group.”
